Intense E1 championship battle heads to Lago Maggiore GP, Italy

London, Tuesday 24 June 2025 - A fierce E1 championship battle is set to continue on the normally calm waters of Lake Maggiore as the world’s first all-electric raceboat series makes its return to Italy this weekend on 27-28 June.

As the UIM E1 World Championship presented by PIF reaches the midway point of the season, the race will mark something of a homecoming for the star-studded series. E1 returns to the birthplace of modern hydrofoiling and where the innovative E1 RaceBird, engineered by Italian founder and CEO Rodi Basso, was first tested.

The E1 Lake Maggiore GP follows a weekend of exhilarating racing in Dubrovnik which saw Aoki Racing Team, owned by international superstar DJ Steve Aoki, secure their second win of the year and move into a small 16-point Championship lead.

The slender difference between Aoki Racing Team and second-placed Team Rafa, means the emerging rivalry between the two teams has left the battle to be crowned 2025 Champions of the Water on a knife edge.

Fans and spectators who want to come and witness the racing action for themselves from the E1 Acceleration Festival can register for tickets here. They will also have a chance to see and read about ‘Frankie’, the very early E1 proof of concept boat.

For those in Italy who want to watch from home, they can tune in to DAZN’s coverage across the weekend from Friday’s qualifying through to Saturday’s race culminating in the Finals. In addition, E1 is broadcast to over 140 territories.

Organised under the Patronage of the Region of Lombardy and the President of the Region Mr Attilio Fontana, the race will be hosted at Marina di Verbella, the premier facility which has been home to the E1 Pilot Academy training programme that finds, develops and nurtures future E1 racing stars. Located within the Ticino Natural Park, the racecourse is sheltered from winds and waves, offering optimal racing conditions for the equal mix of male and female pilots to get the very best speeds out of their E1 RaceBirds, which reach up to 93kph (50knots).

Lake Maggiore has a rich history of marine innovation with Italian Enrico Forlanini conducting the earliest experiments of the technology there in 1906 before the first commercial passenger hydrofoil service launched in 1953.

Rodi Basso, E1 CEO and co-founder, said “We are delighted to be back racing in Italy for another exciting round of the Championship. Having first tested them here, Lake Maggiore is home to our E1 RaceBirds and it will be a joy to watch them battle on the water for the first time. With the conditions expected to be some of the best we’ve ever seen at a race location, it will make for one of the closest fought races to date.”
