The fierce urgency of now: A journey of discovery with Carlos Duarte
The Marine Biologist spoke with E1 Chief Scientist Carlos Duarte, Distinguished Professor, Marine Science at KAUST, about blue carbon, being open-minded, and our place in nature in their October 2024 Issue.https://www.mba.ac.uk
Early Life and Education: Duarte shares that his path to becoming a marine biologist was not straightforward. He experienced a challenging upbringing in a reformatory where learning was difficult and often punitive. However, receiving a scholarship that provided access to quality education transformed his perspective on learning and led him to develop a passion for ecology, a field he found intellectually liberating due to its exploratory nature
Over his 42 years of research, Duarte has not adhered to a single approach; instead, he has been driven by curiosity and the identification of knowledge gaps. He emphasizes the importance of constructive criticism in advancing scientific understanding and has focused on tackling humanity’s grand challenges in recent years.
Duarte believes that fruitful collaborations for ocean recovery will arise from partnerships with experts in photonics, sensor engineering, and AI. He advocates for recognizing the full value of marine ecosystems within an ocean-positive economy, moving beyond traditional views that only value living marine life when extracted for profit incentives for communities to damage habitats for financial gain.
Carbon Markets and Marine Solutions: Duarte shares insights regarding the effectiveness of carbon markets and emphasizes that marine nature-based solutions can contribute significantly to carbon dioxide removal. He estimates that active restoration and conservation projects of seagrass, mangroves, and saltmarsh can provide about 2-5% of the greenhouse gas mitigation necessary to meet the Paris Agreement goals. He also mentions the potential of other ecosystems, like mudflats and algal forests, to enhance carbon sequestration
Geoengineering and Alternative Solutions: Addressing the urgent climate crisis, Duarte acknowledges the need to explore all options, including geoengineering, albeit with caution due to potential risks. He points to historical trials of iron fertilization and other approaches that could help mitigate climate change.
Innovations in Marine Science: Duarte discusses his work on developing flexible, wearable sensors for underwater applications and their potential contributions to biomedicine. He highlights the importance of marine organisms in understanding biological processes, particularly in aging research, and the role of marine models in exploring these areas.

About the UIM E1 World Championship presented by PIF
E1 is the world’s first and only all-electric raceboat championship sanctioned by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), the international governing body for powerboating activities. The UIM E1 World Championship presented by PIF was established to create a new, exciting and competitive on-water racing Championship using electric technologies to focus efforts on innovations that help protect and restore our urban waters and coastal areas.
The Championship sees teams featuring both a male and female pilot. Racing on the water in iconic cities around the world including Jeddah, Doha, Monaco, and Miami, teams are owned by some of the biggest names on the planet. These already include LeBron James, Will Smith, Marc Anthony and Steve Aoki from the world of entertainment, Rafael Nadal, Tom Brady, Virat Kohli and Didier Drogba from the world of sport and Marcelo Claure from the world of business.
E1 pilots navigate tight and technical circuits behind the wheel of the electric RaceBirds. For the latest news and updates, follow us at @E1Series on Facebook, X and Instagram. #ChampionsOfTheWater
